Nonmonotonic behavior in hard-core and Widom{Rowlinson models

چکیده
We give two examples of nonmonotonic behavior in symmetric systems, exhibiting more than one critical point at which spontaneous symmetry-breaking appears or disappears. The two systems are the hard-core model and the Widom{Rowlinson model, and both examples take place on a variation of the Cayley tree (Bethe lattice) devised by Schonmann and Tanaka. We obtain similar, though less constructive, examples of non-monotonicity via certain local modiications of any graph, e.g. the square lattice, which is known to have a critical point for either model. En route we discuss the critical behavior of the Widom{Rowlinson model on the ordinary Cayley tree. Some results about monotonicity of the phase transition phenomenon relative to graph structure are also given.

Entropy-Driven Phase Transitions in Multitype Lattice Gas Models
In multitype lattice gas models with hard-core interaction of Widom Rowlinson type, there is a competition between the entropy due to the large number of types, and the positional energy and geometry resulting from the exclusion rule and the activity of particles. We investigate this phenomenon in four different models on the square lattice: the multitype Widom Rowlinson model with diamond-shap...
متن کاملA Monotonicity Result for Hard-core and Widom–rowlinson Models on Certain D-dimensional Lattices
For each d ≥ 2, we give examples of d-dimensional periodic lattices on which the hard-core and Widom–Rowlinson models exhibit a phase transition which is monotonic, in the sense that there exists a critical value λc for the activity parameter λ, such that there is a unique Gibbs measure (resp. multiple Gibbs measures) whenever λ < λc (resp. λ > λc). This contrasts with earlier examples of such ...
متن کاملAgreement Percolation and Phase Coexistence in Some Gibbs Systems
We extend some relations between percolation and the dependence of Gibbs states on boundary conditions known for Ising ferromagnets to other systems and investigate their general validity: percolation is defined in terms of the agreement of a configuration with one of the ground states of the system. This extension is studied via examples and counterexamples, including the antiferromagnetic Isi...
متن کاملTranslation-invariance of two-dimensional Gibbsian systems of particles with internal degrees of freedom
The conservation of translational symmetry in two-dimensional systems with interaction is a classical subject of statistical mechanics. Here we establish such a result for Gibbsian systems of marked particles with two-body interaction, where the interesting cases of singular, hard-core and discontinuous interactions are included. In particular we thus show the conservation of translational symm...
متن کاملCapillary Waves at the Liquid-Vapor Interface. Widom-Rowlinson Model at Low Temperature
We have examined in detail the structure and properties of the liquid-vapor interface for the two-dimensional Widom-Rowlinson model in its low-temperature regime. Various simplifying features permit the deduction of several basic results. Included among these are (1) unambiguous definition of capillary wave modes with upper wavelength cutoff proportional to ~ 1 l ’ ~ (el = liquid density); (2) ...
